I always recommend having the coordinator in the area you are having the wedding. I am not trying to sell my services. As a weddong consultant I find my brides have a much better time at their wedding if there is a Day of Coordinator on site. My brides relax and tell me all the time that they actually remember their wedding.

The advise I give to all brides is find a wedding consultant that not only puts a smile on your face, but on the face of your family, guests, and vendors. Happy vendors, make for a happy wedding. I am true believer that if a wedding consultant has a good relationship with the vendors you have a very good chance of getting your most out of a vendor for no extra money.

I am an event planner, you alwyas want to have the consultant be where you are getting married, they know the area, and have the understanding with all vendors to work together well. What if you need something on the wedding day will an out of state coordinator be able to get it for you? What if the DJ does not show up or is in a car accident? An in state planner will be able to call a backup.

I personally would hire only one planner in New York who could both serve as a consultant and wedding day coordinator. Having a New York planner will definitely come in handy since he/she will be more familiar with the area. Of course, it will be more difficult to communicate in person, but people do this all the time for destination weddings and out of state weddings. You could always visit with her once or twice in New York as well during the wedding planning in addition to phone calls and e-mails. But if you really think having a consultant would be helpful for you in Chicago, you could still do that and also hire a wedding day coordinator in NY. If you choose to do this, I'd pick your Chicago consultant very carefully. You'll definitely want someone with experience in planning out of state or destination weddings. He/she can also be helpful in facilitating arrangements with your wedding day coordinator in New York.
