What is a good school to attend to become a wedding planner?
June 19, 2009
I am interested in becoming a wedding planner and I would like to know what are some credible on-line schools that offer training in this field
Hi, this is really my own view of how I would handle it.
I will first do some work shadowing or attachment to see if that’s what I really wish to do. I heard that becoming an events planner would mean time will never be yours. Is that what I’d enjoy?
Once I am sure that it is a career I would love, I will study a course more versatile yet still provides the skills I require! One that would allow a change in career should this one not work for you.
Hospitality and business management course maybe? Becoming a wedding planner also involves business management skills, and time management would along with it. Having a business requires planning, and through work attachments I am sure the skills in becoming a wedding planner is sure to come by easily.
I will research on this job, to ask for experiences in such a career, the skills one would require.
I really feel, that some things in life needn’t be studied. Since you’re talking about training, I would suggest working with a wedding planner. I mean, that’s what I would do. Also, I’d open my own store, for I needn’t show myself I did training, or took a course or degree.
I know I’m not exactly helpful, and I didn’t answer your question! I just hope it gives you a broader perspective.
All the best!
Peanut
P.S: Do refer to the sources I found, and I hope it helps you succeed!

How does one become a Wedding Planner?
June 6, 2009
I'm thinking about becoming a wedding planner for a company, but I don't know what steps I need to take to become one. Are there training courses, do I need to go to college and take a course or two in Business Management, or do I need both training and college?
Education & Training
There are no formal requirements for becoming a wedding planner, and many people enter the industry without any specific training. But anyone interested in a career as a wedding planner must be very knowledgeable about the wedding industry and the businesses associated with it.
A number of wedding planner associations offer programs, courses, and seminars on the required skills of the industry. Many courses are available for home study. Some associations offer their own certification if you complete their specified program, but this is not required to pursue a career as a wedding planner. See the Other Resources section for a listing of associations.
In order to become a successful wedding planner, you must have a solid business background. College and university courses in areas such as computer applications, accounting, marketing, and business administration will help prepare you for the demands of running your own business.
The wedding industry encompasses many different types of businesses, so it helps to be familiar with them. Taking post-secondary courses in areas such as photography, fashion design, catering, floral design, event planning, or hospitality and tourism would certainly be beneficial. Focusing on one area of the industry—such as catering—may allow you to offer specialized services. If you do choose to offer such specialized services, it may be a good idea to enrol in a college program in that field.

Other Suggested Qualifications
Know weddings inside out! Do some research on the wedding industry, and familiarize yourself with its products, services, and related traditions. Offer to help a relative or friend plan his or her wedding. This will help you understand the requirements of planning a wedding and introduce you to the hectic pace that’s involved.
You should be friendly, energetic, outgoing, and have a positive attitude, even when situations become very stressful. Wedding planners also have to be calm under pressure and be able to solve problems quickly.
Other important qualities include being very organized and paying close attention to detail. You should have a creative flair and a strong sense of fashion, style, and design. You should also have a good knowledge of different religious and cultural traditions.
Work experience in areas related to the wedding industry will give you a good background. For example, you could pursue job opportunities in banquet halls, fashion retail, or catering. It is also possible to gain experience by training with an established wedding planner. Most wedding planners, however, work on their own and may not be able to pay an assistant or dedicate time to training someone.
