What do you major in for college to become a wedding planner?

February 27, 2009

Also, how many years do you have to go to college to become a wedding planner?

I have a degree in Retail Management and am considering going into wedding planning on the side to try it out. My degree is a Bachelor of Commerce so I took courses in business management, marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, business strategy, statistics, accounting, retail related courses, and human resources courses, etc. All my knowledge from school can be applied to this type of career even though that's not really what I intended when I went to school. You could take courses in business since basically you would be running your own business. All those accounting and finance classes could really come in handy.

  2. If you are in college you should be taking business courses. a professional wedding planner is a self-employed Business owner. You need accounting, marketing, finance skills above all. then, after you graduate, or while you are studying, you need to intern for free for a while at a very respected, successful wedding planning business, then work for them as a paid assistant so that you can get to know venues, florists, caterers on a firsthand basis. Save your money because you also need start-up expenses covered – phones, business cards, fee for wedding shows, living costs for 6 months, samples.

  3. It is not necessary to attend college to become a wedding planner. You can get certificates through correspondence, or if you want to go to college to make yourself more marketable, consider hospitality or arts degrees.

Typically, wedding planners spring off of event planning, and they've worked for a service, or did something part time before launching a full-fledged business. That way, they have contacts with the vendors, and get to know venues in their areas. The most important part of wedding planning is having a creative eye, communication skills, and relationships with vendors. And organization is a big, big part of it, too.
